Water Orchids Correctly for Maximum Results

The qualities inherent in orchids including their colors, sizes and their variety of species and, of course their gorgeous booms have made them a popular favorite among houseplants. Orchids, like all plants, need the proper conditions in order to grow and thrive. Caring for orchids is not difficult; however, you’ll need to pay attention to some basic rules which includes how to water orchids for maximum success. Providing the right amount of water is essential for your orchid’s health. The right amount of water for a given plant will vary according to the species of your plant so it’s important to do some research to determine what your particular orchid requires. Part of this is an understanding of orchids in general and their origins.

Orchid Origins

Orchids are found in tropical areas throughout the world and, as such, these are areas that receive a great deal of rain. High humidity is also a factor in their environment. The best conditions occur when the humidity is 80% or greater. Humidity levels in this range are not comfortable for people so you’ll need to create an environment that will make your orchid healthy and happy.

Watering

One easy method of providing the necessary humidity is to provide a regular water supply. You can do this by using a deep saucer and some pebbles. Place the pebbles in the saucer and then place the orchid pot on top of the pebbles. Then pour water into the saucer but do not allow the water to touch the orchid pot. This will insure that your orchid will receive the high humidity levels that it requires.

Over watering is one of the biggest errors people make in caring for their orchids. They assume that when the soil in the pot looks dry it’s time to water the plant. This is not the case particularly when it comes to orchids. The potting bark may seem to be dry; however, the bark does hold moisture. As a general guideline you should water your orchid sparingly once a week or even every other week. If the orchid is grown in a home environment you should wait until the potting bark is completely dry before you water it.

In their habitat certain species of orchids grow on the trunks and branches of trees and it is normal for their roots to dry out before they receive any water.

How to Fertilize

When it comes to fertilizing your orchid the rule is to fertilize lightly. You’ll find what you need in most local garden centers.  Maintaining a regular routine of providing the correct amounts of water and fertilizer will insure that your orchid will continue to thrive, giving you pleasure and enjoyment for a long time.

Summary

In summary, orchids will be healthy and thrive in your home environment if you provide the care they require. This includes the proper amount of potting bark along with the right amounts of water, fertilizer and sun. Although these exotic plants are quite beautiful they can also be quite temperamental. By understanding how to provide the necessary ingredients for their proper care you can achieve great success in growing these magnificent exotic plants.
